March Meetup – Showcase

We’re starting up the monthly meetings again and the first will be a show and tell of sorts.

Since we have some new members after the big bed build we thought everyone could bring in a piece they’ve finished, are working on, or an idea for something they want to build and we can catch up, see what everyone is interested in and get a change to ask questions and get some pointers.

The meeting will be this Saturday March 28th, from 10-12, at the Duluth MakerSpace 3001 W Superior St. Duluth.

Meeting at 6:30 on March 16th at the Duluth MakerSpace

Now that the beds are finished and warmer weather is coming around we’re going to start having more regular meetings and get togethers.

Our first will be to discuss and plan using the 2500sqft soon-to-be woodshop at the Duluth MakerSpace. We’ll be looking for space ideas, sources for tools, and thoughts about our end of the month meeting.

The meeting will be at 6:30 this Wednesday, March 16th. The Duluth MakerSpace is a 10,000sqft building at 3001 W Superior St. where makers, tinkerers, and builders can hangout and use equipment.

Hope to see a lot of you there.

Beds for the Homeless

We pulled the nails from painted wood
And planed it so the grain looked good,

Glued the Douglas fir and pine,
Clamped the pieces over time

Till they had set, and we could cut
Headboards, legs, and sides to fit.

As we bent to putty holes,
With pampered bodies, troubled souls,

We bowed our heads, as if in prayer,
While saws and joiners tore the air.

Routers carved a fine design
In headboards, keeping you in mind

And how the hover of a dove
Might bless your rest, your making love,

Easing children off to sleep,
Breathing slowly, dreaming deep.

These beds now number sixty-nine:
A thousand hours of our time.

A land where families freeze in cars
Has wished upon some evil star.

Our sleep is fitful, peace is marred,
Considering this nation’s ours.

May these beds support your health.
Forgive us for our luck and wealth.

Call for volunteers

To stay on track of our deadline we still need a lot of volunteers at all skill levels. If you’ve never held a saw you’ll learn valuable skills and if you’re a master carpenter you can use your experience and expertise for a good cause. There are many sessions scheduled through August and with various times you’re sure to find one that fits with your schedule.

If you’re interested in attending a session let us know by email at duluthwoodworkers@hotmail.com.
